Tech Tip: Dramas (Week 12)

Korean Dramas (a.k.a TV Shows)

So, Korea has two main adult tv show genres and this week I'm going to share some of my favorites from the first: dramas. Dramas are TV shows with a plot/story as opposed to the other genre which is variety shows.

Fun Facts about Korean Dramas:
  1. They have a set cap of episodes usually 16-20. Meaning, you will not be left hanging because the network decides not to renew for a second season. You are going to get your ending. The story will be wrapped up nice and neat (most of the time) by the last episode. This also means the story doesn't get dragged out and often ruined for the sake of making more money off of more episodes.
  2. Koreans despise commercials. A show comes on, runs for it's roughly hour long time frame, without a single commercial interruption. Commercials are shown between shows, because Koreans are geniuses. So you get a solid hour of your favorite show instead of forty minutes with twenty minutes of commercial interruptions. (Granted this doesn't really count unless you're watching the show in Korea...)
  3. Because shows last for about twenty episodes there's so many! So many new and different stories! They have a million genres and a million shows in each and there's really a drama for everyone, I swear it.
  4. There's probably more but I can't think of them right now so let's move on.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal

For someone who knows little to nothing about Korea or Korean dramas this trailer will be pretty hard to understand but since it's one of my top favorite shows it's going up here. Sungkyunkwan was the Imperial Academy of Korea during the Joseon dynasty. As usual, only men could attend it. Well, a smart gal who's just trying to take care of her family accidentally ends up going to Sungkyunkwan and it's a pretty fun adventure. Sort of an academic Korea Mulan thing? Except with tons of action and comedy and...yeah.

Fun fact, that University is still a prestigious University in Korea and I was able to attend it. It's super cool going to a school that has so much amazing history behind it.

City Hunter

This trailer is...kinda eh but still pretty accurate and everything. This. Show. Is. Awesome. Action, comedy, little bit of romance, mystery, it's got it all. Basically, two friends go on a special mission to North Korea to get rid of some important officials after NK attacks SK. However, in the middle of the operation the SK leaders decide they want the entire thing covered up, no evidence. So, when the  guys are supposed to be picked up by the submarine and taken home they're all shot down by their own country. One guys survives, his friend saves him. So he vows to take revenge my kidnapping his dead friends son and training him to be  a smart and lethal killer. And the show is about that kid's journey to seek revenge and stuff! It's really good. Just trust me.

Answer Me 1997

I couldn't find a trailer with english subtitles so I decided to just grab the music video for the ost. It has lots of the show in it plus I love the song~ The two main characters of this song are also famous singers in Korea so they sang the title track for the show together and it was a big hit for months in Korea. This show is about the live son a couple of teens in the late 1990's in Korea and then progresses with their lives until the current year (at that time 2012). It's really cute, mostly comedy, a little mystery and just all around wonderful. You laugh a ton and cry a little and be very happy you watched it.

So! I might add more later but I need to go and do some errands so this it for now!
