Growth Mindset

When we were first given the Growth Mindset assignment I was pretty resistant and even a bit irked. The subject had nothing to do with what we were studying in class, why did I have to take time out of my day for it? There's too much else to get done that's more important.

But, like a dutiful little pupil, I proceeded to watch the videos and read the articles.

I was very pleasantly surprised by what I found. Growth Mindset was far from the usual cookie cutter 'this is how we learn, everyone is unique, blah blah' that I was expecting. When Dr. Dweck spoke about the power of "yet" I was truly entranced. I love the idea of not tossing cheap praise or admonishment at children and the idea that we will center learning on a 'if you fall, you can always get back up' approach. So many educators say "we learn from our mistakes" but that isn't how we're actually taught in the classroom.

I am working on my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate) and I really think that studying this approach to life and learning would make me a much better teacher.
